Air-conditioning - a necessary evil

In a tropical country such as Tuvalu, air-condiitoning is a necessary evil for some essential services. Connection of telecommunications services for example relies on equipment being cooled to ensure reliable operation.
I observed this week why this was so important when I audited the air-conditioning and lighting loads for Telecom's main earth station. With one unit not operating at capacity, the racks of equipment that connect this tiny nation to the outside world were reliant on the cooling effects of a large industrial fan...no wonder the internet connection has been somewhat patchy this past week!

But there are many cases here where air-conditioned spaces across the pacific where the buildings could be designed to reduce external thermal loads through the use of insulation and shading.
